Recruiting Teachers in the Digital Age: 5 Tips to Make the Most of Online Platforms

It’s almost that time of year again… recruitment season!

What strategies are you using to recruit the BEST teachers and staff to join your amazing team? If you’re not using social media, you’re missing the top talent! According to Aaron Smith (2015) at the Pew Research Center, 79% of jobseekers used online resources throughout their job search process.

Social media and other digital platforms are becoming more and more essential to sourcing and recruiting teachers. While teacher recruitment is no easy task, embracing the benefits of digital applications and onboarding can certainly make things easier. This can save time not only for applicants, but for administrators as well.

Here are 5 tips that can be used to attract and recruit teachers in the digital age and start your school year off right!

1.) Explore Social Media

Since half of all job seekers are using their smartphones to complete job applications online, social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook are great places to reach potential teacher candidates. Create engaging job postings and share them on these platforms to reach a wider audience (Smith 2015).

It’s no surprise that candidates are using the internet more than ever before to lead their job search. Using a smartphone is a more recent shift in the application process and offers districts unique opportunities to advance their recruitment efforts.

2.) Build a Strong Online Presence

What does your social media say about your school or district? Having a strong online presence is essential in the digital age. Create a professional-looking website that showcases your organization’s culture, values, and job opportunities. This can help attract potential teacher candidates who are interested in working for your organization.

3.) Utilize Video Content

Videos are a great way to showcase your organization’s culture and work environment. Create videos that feature current teachers, students, and staff to give potential candidates a sense of what it’s like to work for your organization.

4.) Leverage Job Boards and Online Job Postings

Use online job boards and social media outlets. Indeed, Glassdoor, and Monster can list your job openings and help you attract potential teacher candidates. These Job boards can reach a large audience and make it easy for candidates to apply for positions. Using tools like these can be an incredible resource to help candidates and your hiring team.

5.) Emphasize the Use of Technology

The digital age is all about technology. Emphasize your school or district’s use of technology and its commitment to using technology in the classroom. This can help attract candidates who are tech-savvy and interested in using technology to enhance the learning experience.

Before You Log On

According to Matthew Lynch (2021), digital recruitment efforts benefit the candidates as well as the hiring team. This furthers the reach of job postings and also highlights a candidate’s ability to effectively utilize technology. Overall, recruiting teachers in the digital age requires a different approach than traditional recruitment methods. By leveraging technology and creating a strong online presence, you can attract and retain high-quality candidates who are interested in working for your organization.
